Why Big Bend?
Big Bend is one of the least crowded national parks, which means your vows feel private and uninterrupted.
Canyons, mesas, badlands, rivers, and endless sky in every direction. Every turn creates a different scene.
Clean desert light that glows at sunrise and stretches long across the Chisos in the evening. Even the blue hour here photographs beautifully.
A quick note: Cell service is extremely limited. We will finalize clear meet points, timing, and a backup plan so the day runs smoothly.
Best Time to Elope
Spring and Fall
Comfortable temperatures and consistent golden hours. These are the most popular seasons for a reason.
Summer
Hot, dry, and intense. Sunrise or blue hour is the way to go, and we bring water and electrolytes.
Winter
Cool days, quiet trails, and beautiful crisp air. Evenings get cold and days are shorter, but the views are incredible.
Sunrise vs sunset
Sunrise gives privacy, cooler temps, and softer tones.
Sunset gives warm desert glow and long shadows along the ridges.
We can choose one or build a two day plan if you want both.
Permit Basics
Ceremony permits
Big Bend requires a Special Use Permit for any wedding, elopement, or vow renewal. Apply at least 30 days in advance. The park remains open to the public with no exclusive-use areas.
Drones
Not allowed anywhere in the park.
Photography permits
Portrait sessions typically do not need an additional permit unless props, sets, closed areas, or monitored locations are involved.
Ceremonies always require the SUP.
Regulations and fees can change, so we will verify current rules and choose locations that meet your group size and access needs.
Location Ideas
Santa Elena Canyon
Towering canyon walls with soft reflected light. Best early in the day before the crowds arrive.
Sotol Vista Overlook
Layers of ridgelines stacked toward the horizon. Easy access and one of the most beautiful sunset views in the park.
The Window in the Chisos Basin
A dramatic V-shaped opening toward the desert. Cool mountain air and an iconic overlook.
Balanced Rock
A short hike with playful geology and bold textures. Best in cooler temps or early/late light.
Plan B and C
Wind, heat, and crowds can shift quickly. We will choose alternates close by so we can pivot without stress.
Where to Stay
Terlingua and Study Butte
Casitas, rustic stays, and desert views close to the western side of the park.
Chisos Basin Lodge
Inside the mountains with cooler air and limited availability.
Nearby towns
Some Airbnbs sit in quieter areas outside the park. Always check drive times since some roads are slow or rugged.
I can recommend stays that fit your style, comfort level, and activity plans.
FAQ
Do we need a permit
Yes for all ceremonies. We will go through the current guidelines together.
How many guests can we bring
Smaller groups work best. Certain areas have limits and access rules which we will review.
Is hiking required
Not at all. You can choose scenic overlooks with zero hiking or mix in short trails. We will match the experience to your comfort.
What if the weather shifts
We will monitor wind and heat and use our backup locations or adjust timing.
Legal Information
Marriage license
Texas licenses can be obtained from any county. There is a seventy two hour waiting period and licenses expire in ninety days. No witnesses are required.
Officiants
A judge, justice of the peace, or any licensed or ordained minister or authorized religious officiant.
Texas is flexible, so someone ordained online in any state is typically valid.
Pro tip: If you want a symbolic vow exchange and handle the legal marriage at home, the experience becomes even more flexible.
FAQ
Are travel fees included?
Yes. All travel for Big Bend sessions and elopements is included in my national park packages.

What if we want something more adventurous?
I am all in. Hiking, driving, off-grid views, desert overlooks, horseback, or multi day sessions — we can shape the day however you want.

Can we bring our dog?

Dogs are allowed only in developed areas such as campgrounds, roads, and paved spaces.
Not allowed on trails or in the backcountry.
For dog-friendly photos, we can choose scenic roadside spots or shoot outside the park boundary.

What if we do the legal paperwork at home?
You can complete the legal marriage before or after your trip and treat the elopement as a symbolic ceremony.
Benefits include:
• No need to track down a local clerk
• No witnesses required
• More flexibility with timing and location
• A smoother, more relaxed experience inside the park
